Helping you Secure Financial Support
What is the Disability Tax Credit?

Many people are unaware that Canada’s tax system includes supports for individuals with disabilities, including certain cases of ADHD. Some individuals may be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), which can offer meaningful financial relief when a condition significantly impacts mental or physical functioning.

An individual may claim the disability amount once they are eligible for the DTC. This amount includes a supplement for persons under 18 years of age at the end of the year.

The purpose of the DTC is to provide for greater tax equity by allowing some relief for disability costs, since these are unavoidable additional expenses that other taxpayers don’t have to face.

Application Process
-
Get Form T2201: You can find the form on the Canada.ca website.
-
Complete Your Portion: Fill out the first part of the form with your personal information or the information of the person you are supporting.
-
Medical Practitioner Certification: A qualified medical professional (such as a physician, psychologist, or nurse practitioner) must complete and sign the second part of the form, detailing the nature and severity of the impairment and its effects on daily living. They should specifically explain how the ADHD affects daily functioning, as a simple diagnosis isn't enough for the CRA.
-
Submit the Form: Send the completed form to the CRA for review. Starting in 2023, you can also apply online through CRA's My Account, which generates a reference number for your medical practitioner to submit their portion online.
If approved, the DTC can also open access to other federal programs, such as the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and the Child Disability Benefit (CDB).
You may also be able to claim the credit retroactively for up to 10 years.
The medical documentation can usually be completed by your physician/nurse practitioner.
